The new Estepona hospital, built in record time by the Local Council and now taken over by the Andalucian Health Service, opened today (Tuesday) receiving Covi-19 patients transferred from the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella.

Although the hospital’s official inauguration is scheduled for next Monday, 8 February, presided over by the president of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno, sources from the regional administration have confirmed that the first patients have already begun to arrive at the new hospital.

Currently these are Covid patients who are stable, and not requiring intensive care. It was the Costa del Sol Health Area Contingency Committee who made the decision to accelerate the opening in response to the worsening situation on the Costa del Sol.

Marbella, Manilva and Estepona had to close all non-essential activity last week. In Marbella today, the Junta reports an incidence rate of 1,260 positives per 100,000 inhabitants, while in Estepona it is 1,093. But also in Manilva the ratio is 1,268.

Last week the Junta de Andalucía announced that Estepona would open for Covid patients, within the plan to attend up to 7,500 hospitalizations for this disease.

After a decade in which the socialist regional administration paralyzed the execution of an infrastructure that was already in process and had even been budgeted, the Estepona Council chaired by the popular José María García Urbano managed to agree with the Junta that it would be the municipality that would build the hospital, and then make it available to the Andalucia Health Service (SAS).

In total, the Town Hall has invested 15 million euros to launch this longed-for dream, which now opens its doors for the coronavirus crisis.
