The Town Council is putting out to tender the drafting of the project and the execution of the works for a socio-cultural and commercial centre on the beachfront.

It is undoubtedly one of the most important projects for Estepona in this term, due to the socioeconomic impact it will have on the town, and which will boost one of the main areas of the municipality, making it possible to open the town to the sea,and provide a new tourist attraction to support the “Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol” project.

The Mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, explained that Estepona “thanks to this strategic project for the town, will expand cultural and leisure services in the municipality, with a new tourist attraction, creating a new urban space in a strategic area” .

The future socio-cultural and commercial facilities “will be developed, on the beachside of Avenida España, taking advantage of the slope between the promenade and the beach, thus connecting the town with the sea.” On the roof of the building, which will be at street level, a large open pedestrian area will be generated, as a viewpoint, over the Mediterranean Sea.

The project plans must provide for the transformation and improvement of the entire urban and social space, undeveloped until now, giving a purpose and endowing it with its own identity.

Prasa Building demolition in 2008

The Town Hall intends that the project is one of the main initiatives that are promoted during this legislation and is part of the productive investment plan that the Council launched last June to generate employment and boost the local economy.

The drafting of the project and the execution of the works has a total budget of 16,940,000 euros.

Urbano has indicated that “for the government team it was a priority to obtain this plot for the enjoyment of the public.” And in May 2019, after several years of administrative procedures, the Town Hall managed to secure the plot, belonging to a bank, to once again come under the ownership of the municipality. In this way, land that had been disused since the Council demolished the existing structure in 2008 was recovered for the municipality.
